10th Lumière Award presented

to Jane Fonda

Swept away by emotion, electric waves that seemed to inhabit the committed actress, Jane Fonda received the Lumière Award in Lyon last night. To salute her career and political activism, a crowd of women and a few men took the stage, with the entire venue in a unified reverence to the energy, passion and immense talent of Lady Jane.

The music and words of the celebration (even more than the images), expressed Jane Fonda’s fondness and affection for France, a land she knows well, where she has shot several films (en français, s’il vous plaît). Edith Piaf, whose voice, in infinite vibrations, permeated the Auditorium, melded into a performance by Vincent Delerm: “Mon manège à moi, c’est toi,” he began, before inviting the public to chime in to "impress Jane Fonda, for the image of France in the United States," followed by other laughter-provoking lines, pronounced with his usual charming wit. So the whole audience sang along, inspired by the simplicity and enthusiasm of the actress.

Great theater artiste Dominique Blanc, still under the spell of Jane Fonda’s master class that very afternoon, read from Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex. The 70-year-old words, unfortunately still terribly relevant in 2018, paid tribute to the feminist activism of Jane. Then Anaïs Demoustier, Anne Consigny and Suzanne Clément each performed a reading from the star’s autobiography, My Life. After a brief musical interlude with Jacques Brel, interpreted by Nolwenn Leroy, the filmmaker Costa-Gavras gave a rich homage to Jane Fonda, describing her as a "great citizen actress" and regretting that they never had directly collaborated. "I keep the faith and think the wish is mutual," he commented.

Jane Fonda, "very, very moved" by the evening honoring her, lit the audience on fire with her hilarious statements, punctuating her thanks with happy little jumps, like a child whose curious gaze sweeps over vast building sites left to explore. "Ah, voilà la quille," she exclaimed with determination and humor in front of a crowd amazed by the actress's savvy accuracy and her ability to give the ceremony a free, spontaneous spirit. The laureate of the 10th Lumière Award then launched into a few verses of "Je ne regrette rien," another Piaf, and 100% Jane Fonda.
