As announced to the press on June 11th, Norwegian actress and director Liv Ullmann will be a guest of honor at the Lumière festival.
Her presence lends a distinguished note to a program that already includes major events - The Lord of the Rings All-Nighter and the family-friendly cinema concert The Kid - as well as a panorama of films by American director Richard Thorpe. Liv Ullmann, seen in Margarethe Von Trotta's beautiful film, Searching for Ingmar Bergman (theatrical release slated for September 5th), will be in Lyon from the opening days of the festival.
Born in Tokyo in 1938, Liv Ullmann lived in various cities abroad in her childhood before debuting in the theater on her arrival in Oslo as a teenager. Quickly noticed on the stage, she performed plays by Brecht, Goethe and Ibsen. Struck by her resemblance to Bibi Andersson, Bergman wrote Persona with the actress in mind; it was the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration that produced some of the Swedish filmmaker’s masterpieces: Scenes from a Marriage, Cries & Whispers and Saraband.
« There is a difference between film and the digital.
Digital is perfect, you know.
But with film, you attain depth,
you capture the subject. »

Liv Ullman has also worked with Jan Troell (The Emigrants), Mario Monicelli (Let’s Hope It’s a Girl) and Richard Attenborough (A Bridge Too Far), while continuing her scriptwriting. With Bergman, she maintained a romantic, then friendly relationship; he penned the screenplays of two films she directed (Private Confessions in 1996 and Faithless in 2000). In 2014, Miss Julie, adapted from August Strindberg's play, cemented her career behind the camera. With some fifty feature films to her credit, as well as public and critical acclaim as a filmmaker, Liv Ullmann has become a major figure of Scandinavian cinema.
